It wasn’t that long ago that Logan Cruz didn’t even swim, at least not competitively.

The East Stroudsburg North senior didn’t start until his freshman year, where he got into swimming after seeing his older brother, Jacob, swim during his high school career.

«He was a big inspiration in my journey and helped me when I was learning,» Cruz said.

Like most swimmers, Logan started out as a freestyle swimmer, but his head coach Kelsey Nagy saw potential in another area.

«My coach saw the most potential in breaststroke,» Cruz said. «I’ve loved it ever since.»

Turns out, Cruz was really good at breaststroke. Good enough to threaten the school record as a junior, recording a time of 1:02.32 in the breaststroke, which was about a second shy of the time. Cruz knew what the time was before that day — he’s known it his entire high school career, and he had a personal goal of breaking it his junior year.

While he didn’t break the record, Cruz’s performance was good enough to win a district title, the first North swimmer since Marquis Wright in 2004 to do so, and qualify for the state meet, the first time a North swimmer had accomplished that feat in 20 years.

It was an experience the now-senior could build upon going into his final high school season.

«Through my first experience to states, I’ve learned what it takes to get to the very top. The swimmers who were way faster than I were trained rigorously to achieve their times and placement,» Cruz said. «It also was a humbling experience as I went from the fastest breaststroker in my district to just an average swimmer at states, and that pushed me throughout my senior year to be the best version I can.»

Cruz held true to his own word: As a senior, he swam the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:01.05, breaking the previous school record that stood for 21 years.

It was a great accomplishment, but it was one that barely lasted two weeks, because at districts, he broke it again, swimming the same event in 1:01.02.

Cruz won the silver medal in districts this year, but it was still enough to qualify for states for the second consecutive season.

«This achievement is a testament not only to his athletic ability, but to his relentless dedication and drive to continually improve and perform at the highest level,» Nagy said about Cruz. «As our boys team captain this season, Logan demonstrated outstanding leadership both in the pool and on the deck. His influence on our team culture and work ethic is something that will continue to resonate within the program for years to come.»

Cruz will end his high school career with another shot at a state medal, and with how well he’s swimming recently, the odds are increasingly in his favor.
