WAIPAHU (HawaiiNewsNow) – Experience the food, history and traditions of one of Hawaii's largest ethnic groups at the 14th annual Flores de Mayo and 34th annual Filipino Fiesta.

One in four Hawaii residents claim some Filipino ancestry, and the annual celebration of Filipino culture gives attendees a chance to engage in culinary experiences, hands-on activities and competitions.

The festival takes place on Saturday, May 2, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Filipino Community Center in Waipahu.

The Fiesta stages will feature a lineup of performances, including standout acts from Tawag ng Entablado, Fiesta's social media talent showcase, and new entertainment offerings like karaoke.

Moanalua High School's Filipino Club joined Sunrise to showcase a performance of Tinikling, where dancers move quickly between two bamboo poles that are clapped together in rhythm. It represents bamboo traps and birds weaving in and out of it.

“This gives us as a club the opportunity to make Filipino youth here in Hawaii unashamed of their culture and unashamed of expressing it because it is what makes us, us,†said Moanalua student Camille Irurita-Corpuz.

The evening will culminate with a special performance set by internationally acclaimed Filipino performing artist Jake Zyrus, known for his powerhouse vocals and who first gained global fame performing on U.S. talk shows and high-profile concerts and starring in the TV show Glee.

Fiesta-goers can also look forward to returning favorites that have become staples such as the Filipino Street Food Experience, offering authentic flavors and nostalgic eats, featuring local businesses like Mama Merce's Kitchen.

The Filipiniana Market will sell new and gently used cultural attire, while Ligaya's Sari Sari Store will give attendees a traditional Filipino corner store experience.

This year's theme is “Rice: Where Every Grain Tells A Story†which symbolizes perseverance, abundance, and unity in Filipino culture.

The event is free and open to the public. Guests are encouraged to ride Skyline to Pouhala Station or park and shuttle to Fiesta grounds.
