FLORENCE, AZ (AZFamily) — Several inmates were injured, one seriously, after a fight broke out at a state prison facility in Pinal County.

According to the Arizona Department of Corrections, Rehabilitation and Reentry (ADCRR), a fight involving multiple inmates broke out Sunday afternoon in the Rynning Unit of ASPC-Eyman in Florence.

The agency reports that numerous inmates were taken to the hospital for various injuries, one of whom remains in critical condition. Other inmates were treated on-site by prison medical staff.

Other details have not been released, but ADCRR says the fight appears to be the result of a gang-related dispute. It's unclear how many inmates were involved in the altercation or how many were hurt.

“ADCRR is confident that this targeted, gang-related incident does not represent a threat to the wider inmate population or ADCRR staff, nor is it reflective of the broader safety conditions inside Arizona's prisons,†the department said in a news release. “ADCRR continues to prioritize the safety and well-being of its staff with onsite employee support resources available 24/7 at every prison complex.â€

Officials say the Rynning Unit is still restricted as of early Monday afternoon, and that visitation has been canceled until further notice.

The Eyman Complex is comprised of six units that can house a total of about 6,700 people.
